General FAQs

What is Red SwanSM?

Founded in 2008, Red Swan enables women to transform unwanted jewelry into something infinitely more useful: money. Participants submit their jewelry by mail using the Red Swan Safe-Pak and promptly receive payment for their goods. Red Swan builds empowering communities of women through the help of Leads, who share the opportunity within their social networks and earn commissions from referred sales. Red Swan encourages women to convert their idle goods into currency for meaningful change, whether in their own lives or for charitable causes.

Is it safe to send my jewelry through the mail?

Yes. Red Swan and its affiliated companies have developed a reliable submission process with nearly 20 years of doing business through the mail. Hundreds of thousands of valuable pieces have traveled safely between sellers like you and our offices. Your items travel in the Red Swan Safe-Pak through the US Postal system. This is the same dependable method that the jewelry industry uses to transport shipments from one destination to another.

Why is Red Swan the best way to sell my jewelry?

In addition to always offering fair prices for your jewelry, Red Swan enables you to avoid intimidating experiences at pawn shops and congested jewelry markets when selling used jewelry. Our unique jewelry selling experience is quick, safe, comfortable, hassle-free and haggle-free. We also respect your perogative to change your mind. When you sell goods at traditional retail or wholesale storefronts, the sale is final. Red Swan, on the other hand, is happy to return your jewelry for any reason if you notify us within 10 days of the date on your payment check.

Can you give me an exact price before seeing an item?

Unfortunately, we cannot. There are too many variables that affect values. Also, we must physically inspect each item to make an accurate determination of value. If you are not completely satisfied with our offer, simply call us within 10 days of the date on the check, return your check to us, and we will return your items at no charge to you.

Are my items safe and insured while in your possession?

Absolutely. Your Safe-Pak has multiple barcode signatures to identify your jewelry throughout the selling process. All items are stored safely in vaults throughout the entire process. Red Swan has video and central station alarm systems, and your items remain in this environment until we complete the purchase.

In the event of a loss or damage after we receive an item, Lippincott will accept liability of one-third (1/3) of the appraised value of the lost or damaged item or Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000.00), whichever is less. Please see our Terms of Service for specific applicable terms.

I submitted an item I shouldn't have. Can I get it back?

Absolutely! Simply call 1-888-309-SWAN and your item will be returned free of charge once it reaches our offices. If you have already received payment for the item, please notify us by phone within 10 days of the date on the check and return the check to us. Your item will then be returned without any charge to you.

Is Red Swan a pyramid scheme?

No. Red Swan reflects a triangular organization but is not a pyramid scheme. Unlike pyramid schemes, Red Swan does not require you or your referrals to purchase or commit to anything in order to participate. We pay for sales from the networks of our participants at realistic, predetermined pay out rates.

Is the Red Swan Safe-Pak free?

Where do I send my Safe-Pak?

Your Safe-Pak is pre-addressed and postage-paid. Simply seal your items inside the Safe-Pak with a copy of your Item Submission Form, drop it in the mail and you're done!

How do I use the Safe-Pak?

Your Safe-Pak will arrive at the address you provide with an Item Submission Form. Simply fill out the form, enclose the white (top) copy inside the box along with your jewelry and drop the Safe-Pak in the mail. Your postage is prepaid. You may track the status of your submission online or by calling 1-888-309-SWAN using the barcode on your receipt.

Is the Safe-Pak insured if it gets lost?

If you send us items in a prepaid Red Swan Safe-Pak, Lippincott will assume liability for an amount equal to the lesser of the one-third (1/3) of the appraised value of the lost contents or Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00). Accordingly, if you anticipate the value of your items to be in excess of $500.00, you should send them via UPS or the Postal Service (using the Red Swan materials) and insure your item(s) against loss in transit for your full anticipated value. In the event of a loss or damage after we receive an item, Lippincott will accept liability of one-third (1/3) of the appraised value of the lost or damaged item or Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000.00), whichever is less. What if all my items don't fit in the Safe-Pak?

We will gladly send you additional submission boxes. Please call 1-888-309-SWAN.

Can I use my own packaging?

Yes, but you must include in your packaging the Item Submission Form provided in your Safe-Pak. Red Swan uses the barcode on this inventory sheet to identify and track your items. Should you decide to use your own packaging, you are responsible to insure your items.

How do I know you received my jewelry?

After about 7- 10 business days from the time you mail your Safe-Pak, using the tracking number provided on your Item Submission Form you are able to view the status of your submission using our online tracking system or you can call us at 1-888-309-SWAN for an update.

How is it determined how much will be paid for my jewelry?

The purchase price of your jewelry is based on the quality, size, rarity, value and marketability of each item as objectively determined by jewelry buying experts.

How will I receive my payment?

Once you submit your jewelry using the secure, postage-paid Safe-Pak, experienced appraisers will carefully assess the value of each item and promptly mail you a check.

How long will it take to receive my payment?

Upon arrival of your submitted Safe-Pak, the processing and issuing of your check will be completed promptly (usually within 48 hours). Keep in mind that the Safe-Pak will be traveling via First Class US Mail, which could take up to 7 business days or more depending on where you live. And it could take a similar amount of time for your payment to travel back to you. You can track the status of a submission online or by calling 1-888-309-SWAN using the barcode on your receipt.

What if I'm not satisfied with my payment?

If you are not absolutely satisfied with your payment and would like your items back, simply notify us at 1-888-309-SWAN within ten days of the date on the check and return your check to us. Your item(s) will then be returned free of charge.

I'm unsure if Red Swan will accept my jewelry. What should I do?

You may submit any items that look like precious metals or stones. Keep in mind, it costs you nothing to send your jewelry and you are always able to request it back if you are not happy with the payment issued. Please check the full list of jewelry we purchase.

Do you buy broken jewelry or items missing stones?

Yes! We accept both damaged and orphaned items.

Do you remove stones to appraise and price items?

No. Red Swan uses state-of-the art equipment to appraise the jewelry we receive without disturbing stones. In some rare cases a primary stone in a ring may be set in a way that makes it impossible to accurately determine the value, even with the finest equipment. In such cases, we will contact you to request your permission to remove the stone. Only with your permission will we take such a step.

What if I'm not sure if a piece is real or fake?

You may submit any items that look like precious metals or stones. Appraisers will determine whether they are actually of value and price the pieces accordingly. If the items are not precious, we will either pay the appraised value or return your items. Please do not submit jewelry you know is costume or gold plated.

Why should I become a Red Swan Lead?

After selling your first item, you can dramatically increase your earnings by becoming a Red Swan Lead. As a Lead, you'll share the Red Swan opportunity with friends and acquaintances and receive a generous commission on every piece they sell. Your commission will in no way diminish the payment your referrals receive. There's absolutely nothing to purchase, so you can only stand to profit—and have fun in the process!

FAQs for Red Swan Leads

What commission will I make for referring friends?

As a Red Swan Lead, you receive commissions on the purchase price of jewelry sold through your immediate network and three additional levels of referrals. Click here for a description of the commission structure.

Does my commission affect how much my referrals earn?

Not at all. Your referrals receive the full value we would pay for their goods regardless of your commissions.

How do I order more Safe-Paks?

It's a cinch to order more complimentary Safe-Paks. Click here to have them delivered to your door.

Is there a limit to how many Safe-Paks I can order?

You may order up to four Lead Kits initially. You may then order additional Lead Kits at a rate of one for every $250 in purchases Red Swan makes from your referrals. Keep in mind, your 90 Day Preferred Commission Period starts the day your Safe-Paks are sent to you, so best to maximize your earnings by only ordering the amount you will use right away.

My friend is interested in becoming a Red Swan Lead. What should she do?

Simply give her one of the Safe-Paks that was included in your Lead Kit so that she can submit an item if she hasn't already. Once we receive her kit she can request a Lead Kit of her own. Then she will be able to start earning commissions easily and securely, and you will receive commissions on sales from her referrals without reducing her payments from Red Swan.

How much should I spend on my Red Swan get-together?

You aren't required to spend a dime on hosting a jewelry party get-together. Your Lead Kit includes everything you need to share Red Swan with your friends, including custom invitations, reminder cards, thank you notes and Safe-Paks for them to submit their jewelry. If you would like to supply food, refreshments or some additional activities, see our event tips for inspiration. If you prefer, you may also distribute kits individually through one on one discussions with friends, family or coworkers.

How often are commission checks distributed?

Red Swan will distribute commission checks in the middle of each month. Those checks will cover commissions on purchases we make in the previous month. Commission are paid on completed transactions whereby the participant has kept payment past the 10 day return window. Your commission check will specify by name and dollar amount the purchases from members of your Tier 1 network. However, for privacy and other reasons, your commission check will express transactions with members of your Tiers 2-4 as the total purchase value by Tier.

My referrals have asked how Red Swan can pay me commissions without reducing the amount they receive for their jewelry. How can I assure them that they receive the full value for their goods, regardless of my commission?

Other businesses rely on marketing and advertising to gain customers, which consumes upwards of 30 percent of their profits. Because Red Swan depends on the word of mouth of women like you, we are able to pay commissions from the money that we do not use for traditional advertising.

Charity FAQs

How do I donate my payment to a designated charity?

Donating the payment for your jewelry to charity is easy. You and your network send in your valuables, and Red Swan forwards the money from the sale directly to the charity of your choice. First, you must obtain a charity code. Go to our charitable giving page to pre-authorize the charity or non-profit organization of your choice. Once the charity has been accepted, we will send you an Authorized Charity Code. Include this code on the Item Submission Form that is included within the Safe Paks that you and anyone in your network send in. Red Swan will distribute the proceeds from your jewelry sales directly to the designated organization. We issue and mail the check so you don't have to. Each seller will receive a check stub showing the amount of the sale proceeds for their items.

What kinds of charities can I donate to?

Recommended organizations include the following:

501(c)(3) nonprofits * Community associations (such as your local Little League) * Churches and other houses of worship * Government entities * Schools (but not school clubs) * PTAs/PTOs * Social clubs * Political parties * Athletic organizations * Booster clubs * Health and research organizations * Special events * Fundraisers

The organization you choose must meet the requirements of our Anti-Money Laundering Program under the USA Patriot Act and other criteria that Red Swan may establish from time to time. Though we intend to provide an agnostic giving platform, Red Swan reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to refuse to forward sale proceeds as directed (and, in such case, Red Swan will pay the proceeds to the seller).

What do I need to do to set up charitable giving?

You must pre-authorize the organization before you and your friends submit your jewelry to Red Swan. To do so, visit our charitable giving page and input the name and other requested information regarding your chosen organization. You may also call our customer support line at 1-888-309-SWAN(7926) for assistance. After receiving your pre-authorization request, we will perform certain diligence to confirm the organization's eligibility. Once they have been accepted, we will send an Authorized Charity Code to you by email.

How do I communicate the charitable giving option to my network?

Many women use Red Swan as a fundraising tool for their favorite causes. You and your friends have the option of designating your jewelry sales to a charitable or non-profit organization that speaks to you. Depending on the type of event you are planning, it may be as easy as sending a note or an email, or speaking with your group in person. There is additional information available by visiting our charitable giving page. At any step of the way, you may also call our customer support line at 1-888-309-SWAN(7926) for assistance.

What does my network need to do to donate their items to charity?

Once you have received an Authorized Charity Code from us by email, you can share the code with any referrals who are participating with you in giving to the charity. When they send in their items, they will include the code on the line provided on the Item Submission Form. After your jewelry has been appraised, we will send the seller a check stub showing the amount of the sale proceeds for their items. If they are satisfied with the amount of the sale, we will forward a check in the amount of the sale proceeds as a donation from them to the designated organization.

What if anyone in my network is unsatisfied with the amount or changes their mind, can they get their items back?

If you or anyone in your network is not absolutely satisfied with her payment or simply changes her mind in connection with a charitable donation, she may notify us at 1-888-309-SWAN(7926) within 10 days of the date on the check stub. The item(s) will then be returned to the participant free of charge. The fact is, nothing is more important than your satisfaction.

Can I put a portion of my payment to charity and have the rest sent to me?

Unfortunately payments cannot be split. If you would like to send a portion of your earnings to your charity, we suggest you send separate submissions in individual Safe-Paks.

Do you provide receipts for submissions donated to charity?

After we receive your Safe-Pak and appraise your jewelry, we will send you (or the respective seller) a non-negotiable check stub showing the amount of the sale proceeds for your items. If you are unsatisfied with the amount or would like your items back, simply call 1-888-309-SWAN(7926) within 10 days of the date on the stub. The items will then be returned to you free of charge (see our Terms of Service) Otherwise, your sale to Red Swan is effective upon expiration of the 10 day period, and we will promptly forward a check in the amount of the sale proceeds as a donation from you to the designated organization.

The check stub is the only documentation you will receive from Red Swan. Your designated organization may issue you a receipt for the amount donated through the Red Swan platform.

Deductibility of your donated sale proceeds depends on your individual situation and the legal status of your designated organization. Red Swan does not provide tax advice. For tax-related information it is best to contact your financial advisor.

Do I need to inform my organization about the contributions through Red Swan?

Once you have provided the necessary information about your organization, Red Swan will contact the recipient organization to obtain written confirmation of its willingness to accept the proposed donation. Upon our receipt of the acceptance letter from your designated charity, we will then send an Authorized Charity Code to you by email.

Will I receive commissions on items that are donated to charity?

Yes. You will receive commissions on the purchase price of jewelry sold through your immediate network for charitable contributions according to the same schedule as regular submissions.

Is the amount that I receive for my jewelry the same regardless of whether I am keeping the money myself or donating it to charity?

Yes. At Red Swan we are proud of our high standards. Our experienced appraisers carefully assess the value of each item consistently and fairly, regardless of the beneficiary.

If I apply to donate to a charity does everyone in my network need to contribute their payments?

No. Individuals within your network can decide to either donate their funds to charity or keep the money for themselves. If a person in your network does not want to donate their proceeds, they simply need to leave the checkbox on their Item Submission Form blank. Red Swan will then issue the check directly to them.
